Google sites alone takes up 37 billion searches (~60% of total no. of searches) giving it a role of dominator followed by Yahoo sites with less than a quarter of Google's share in search.

Localization is still a challenge for the global players. Like in China and Korea, local search engines are leaders out-performing Google and Yahoo in their corresponding markets.

IKEA Dream Kitchen.

It's a linear video. And it's nothing linear. The journey runs across kitchens of various styles in a path on users' control. Don't miss the "turn around" function.

These guys are doing better and better in playing this frozen-moments-with-user-view-control trick. What's next? Timeline user control? That will add to the current 2.5 dimensions into 3.5 dimensions. Spacetime, huh?

Quick checklist for game concept before commencing an online promotion / branding mini game.

Often been asked by clients whether to develop online mini games is a cost effective channel for promotion or branding. That depends largely on a matrix of business objectives, target group, resources and existing web assets. Yet to get rid of making wrong investment of online marketing budget, there's a quick checklist to x-ray the game concept:

1. High relevancy to your product / service
2. High relevancy to your target group
3. Sound game logic and visual / audio presentation
4. Addictive & engaging elements
5. A "Oh!"
6. A "Wow!"

If it passed on 1, 2 & 3, basically the game alone deserves a green light. 4, 5, 6 are harsh screens. Together they can entwine into a whirlpool of viral power, a big hit and a handful of awards.

New York Times dropped it's paid subscription program.

New York Times dropped it's 227K subscribers, US$10M revenue a year "TimesSelect" paid subscription program days ago. Access to most of the newspaper's archives and columns is now free.

"Our projections for growth on that paid subscriber base were low, compared to the growth of online advertising," said Vivian L. Schiller, senior vice president and general manager of the site, NYTimes.com.

The archives and opinion columns are expected to drive a lot of reader traffic to the site, contribute to advertising revenue, directly and indirectly.

It's been a long debate whether online version of printed media should go for paid subscription model or online advertising model (or the hybrid of, which was once most popular). Continuous advancement of online advertising technology pulls its weight and it's getting clear that online advertising is more sexy and will get more sexy for media targeting the majority mass.

Exceptions are those in niche markets and/or the readers are willing to pay premium subscription fee.
